The Veselka Mushroom: The Benefits and Risks of This Mysterious Fungus

The Veselka Mushroom: The Benefits and Risks of This Mysterious Fungus

Among all the members of the fungal kingdom, there is one that inspires both admiration and wonder—the Veselka mushroom. Its appearance, rapid growth, and unusual aroma have given rise to countless legends and superstitions. But behind this mystical façade lies a powerful natural tool for boosting immunity and restoring the body.

What does a Veselka mushroom look like?

The Veselka mushroom—scientifically known as Phallus impudicus or the common stinkhorn. But it goes by so many other names: the upstart, the shy one, the devil’s finger, the devil’s egg, and the witch’s egg. And that’s not even the whole list.

What makes this mushroom unique is that it literally shoots up from the ground in a matter of hours. In the morning, it is just an egg-shaped growth, but by evening, a tall fruiting body 10–30 cm tall has already emerged, with a distinctive cap resembling a spearhead. However, this also presents a problem. A fully matured mushroom is no longer suitable for consumption. It begins to rot and decompose almost immediately.

That's why it's harvested very quickly in the first few hours after it appears. At that point, it's edible and at its most nutritious.

Devil's Fingers Mushroom: Medicinal Properties

The main benefit of the Veselka mushroom lies in its anti-inflammatory properties. It helps heal wounds and ulcers. Just as our grandmothers used to apply a sliced mushroom to cuts and inflammations, modern ointments containing its extract are used to treat the skin.

🌿The mushroom also contains polysaccharides and phytoncides, which:

  • help the liver eliminate toxins;
  • lower bad cholesterol levels and cleanse the blood vessels;
  • fight viruses (herpes, flu) and inflammation;
  • boost sexual potency and treat male health issues;
  • reduce the occurrence of allergic reactions.

Veselka activates macrophages—cells responsible for "seeking out and destroying" viruses and mutated cells. It has long been used to treat tumors and cysts because it has the ability to inhibit abnormal cell growth.

What makes a Veselka so mysterious?

🌀In addition to its rapid growth and beneficial properties, the Veselka plant holds many mysteries:

  1. The invisible mushroom. Right underfoot, in the forest litter, the Veselka mushroom spends most of its life in the form of... an egg. An ordinary, jelly-like egg. It can lie there for weeks, and no one would even guess that it’s a mushroom. And then, it shoots up at a rate of 5–7 mm per minute. That’s faster than bamboo and most plants in the world grow. In 15–30 minutes, it grows to 25 cm.
  2. An interesting life cycle. At first, it’s an egg, then a “spear mushroom” with a jelly-like cap, and in the end… it just disappears. It literally vanishes into thin air, leaving behind only a wet spot and a smell.
  3. It smells like a dead body. That’s its main feature. A mature Veselka mushroom smells as if someone has died—a sharp odor of carrion and rot. But that’s not a flaw—it’s a feature! Flies are drawn to this smell, and they’re the ones that spread the mushroom’s spores.
  4. Legends and Superstitions. Because of its ability to appear out of nowhere, this mushroom was once considered magical. It was said to cure any illness (this is partly true—its extracts are indeed used in medicine to heal wounds and treat inflammation). It was also believed that finding its “egg” would bring great luck.

A Veselka reminds us that nature is full of mysteries we haven't yet fully unraveled. And that is where its true magic lies.

The Veselka Mushroom: Uses in Treatment

Traditionally, the mushroom is used in extracts or powders. However, since fresh reishi has a rather distinctive odor (which attracts insects and helps spread its spores), it’s best to take it in capsule form 💊.

Today, the Veselka mushroom is regarded as a gentle immune booster and a source of natural biopolysaccharides, which can be combined with other medicinal mushrooms—reishi, cordyceps, trametes, and chaga.
